U.S. Mint Discontinues Pennies
Pennies No Longer Available at Credit Union West
December 4, 2025 - The Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Scott Bessent, officially stopped the production of pennies in November 2025. The decision was influenced by the rising cost of producing the penny, which has increased 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents per penny.
Billions of pennies are still in circulation and will remain legal tender, but new ones will no longer be made.
What does this mean for Credit Union West members?
In alignment with this nationwide change, Credit Union West will no longer accept pennies for deposit or withdrawal after December 31st, 2025. Members will receive money rounded to the next nickel.
